Dr. Betty Lou Williams is an Associate Professor of Art Education, Department of Curriculum Studies, UHM COE where she teaches graduate level students who are furthering their careers through professional development and life long learning in the arts. She has taught secondary level fine arts certificate students in the Institute for Teacher Education and served as an Adjunct Professor in American Studies in the graduate Museum Certificate Program teaching EDCS/AMST 685 Museums and Education. Previously she taught at Fisk University, Tennessee State University, Florida State University, the Chicago Art Institute (in both the Department of Museum Education and in the Studios Program), and the John Dewey Laboratory School at the University of Chicago. She has worked with students of all ages, nationalities and ability levels in public and private schools and museums. She has a B.A. in Studio Art from U.C. Davis and a Certificate of Fine Art (the British C.F.A. is equivalent to the American M.F.A.) with minors in Figure Drawing, Printing, Art History, and Anatomy from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University, England. She also has a Teaching Credential in Art (K-14) from San Diego State University reciprocated in the state of Illinois (K-12). Dr. Williams earned the Ph.D. in Art Education from Florida State University (FSU) in 1994. Her dissertation, entitled "Changes in Museum Education Practices Since 1984: In the Context of the Evolution of Art Museum Education in America" was awarded a Getty Doctoral Fellowship in 1993-1994. Dr. Williams also completed the Certificate in Educational Evaluation while at FSU. The topics of her publications include: the history of art museum education, policy issues in art education and museum education, cross-cultural studies in art education, aesthetics, art historical research of African American artists, French and American artists and the exchange between Japanese and American art, aesthetics, art history, and art education. She also specializes in qualitative research methodology with an emphasis on art education, museums, art history, aesthetics and anthropology. Her art forms include painting, drawing, printing, sculpture, and photography.
