Dr. Barbara Schwartz-Bechet, Chair and Professor, in the Department of Special and Early Education has been in the field of education for over 25 years. Dr. Schwartz-Bechet received her doctorate in Applied Behavior Analysis from Columbia University/Teachers College in New York City. She began her career as a regular education teacher, with a BS in elementary education and later became a special education teacher, with a MS in Ed., working with students’ ages several months through the age of 21. She continued on with her career as an educational evaluator, and later as principal of several schools in New York City. Upon relocation to Maryland, Dr. Schwartz-Bechet supervised and taught graduate special education students at Johns Hopkins University and was an associate professor of education at Bowie State University for 13 years. Dr. Schwartz-Bechet also evaluated children under the Maryland Child Find program with physician Dr. Renee Wachtel in Howard County Maryland. Dr. Schwartz-Bechet was instrumental in the creation, facilitation & vitality of three special education Professional Development Schools in Prince George’s County MD. She is widely published and has presented nationally and internationally. Her current research interests include personalized instruction in online formats, mentoring, professional development schools for children with special needs, virtual schooling and virtual professional development schools, technology integration for low performing schools, and athletic opportunities for children with special needs.
