Andy Collis was born in Nottingham, England, in 1956. Having taught art at a Manchester high school, he had his own painting studio at Newark on Trent before becoming a lecturer at colleges of further education in Nottinghamshire. Emigrating to the Central Coast of New South Wales in 1989, Andy continued his own painting practice and lectured at TAFE NSW Hunter Institute’s Cessnock and Hunter Street campuses. He joined the Discipline of Humanities and Creative Arts at Avondale College of Higher Education in 1984, where he lectures in visual communication, mainly in the areas of painting and drawing and art history. He completed his master’s at the University of Wollongong in 1999 and his PhD at The University of Newcastle in March 2015. His thesis: The human touch? What is the value of the artist/sitter relationship to contemporary portrait painting?. Andy’s studio is at Avoca Beach on the Central Coast, and he is represented by the KAB Gallery in Terrigal, which regularly hosts professional experience seminars for Andy’s students.
