In 2010 I was a recipient of a University Post Graduate Scholarship from CDU to conduct a creative research project, titled -Underwater Basket Weaving. As a Visual artist and PhD candidate I am exploring and experimenting with the use of marine debris, such as ghost nets and fishing line to be used as an art medium so as to creatively dispose of the harmful plastics as well as raise the profile of the important work done by conservation organisations such as Ghost Nets Australia. Under Water Basket Weaving involves creating art using marine debris as well as teaching the broader community the art of making baskets, sculpture and wearable art from recycled fishing nets and marine debris. Since commencing the Underwater Basket Weaving project in 2011 I have used several approaches to creatively dispose of the ghost nets, including being a contracted artist by Ghost Nets Australia to facilitate ghost net weaving activities which involved teaching Indigenous rangers and weavers on Groote Island and at the 2011 Garma Festival to create products such as baskets, bags and sculpture which they can sell in their art centres and exhibit locally and nationally. I have also facilitated many ghost net weaving workshops with adults and children in schools, at festivals and academic seminars in Darwin as well as Nationally, including delivering a presentation at the World Environment Education Congress titled- Under Water Basket Weaving- The Significance of Fibre Art as a Creative Tool for Ecological Education in Brisbane in 2011. I have also been creating fine art out of the ghost nets which have been exhibited locally in Darwin as well as Nationally . In 2011 I was also invited to give a practical demonstration and discuss my Ghost Net weaving project at a design school in Finland.
