He has pioneered in the articulation of animation theory and ‘poststructuralist’ and ‘postmodernist’ French thought, especially the work of Jean Baudrillard and Jacques Derrida. He organised the world's first international conference on animation, The Illusion of Life, in Sydney in 1988. He edited The Illusion of Life: Essays on Animation, the world’s first anthology of scholarly essays theorizing animation (Power Publications in association with the Australian Film Commission, Sydney, 1991); Samuel Weber’s Mass Mediauras: Form, Technics, Media (Power Publications and Stanford University Press, Sydney/Stanford, 1996); and The Illusion of Life 2: More Essays on Animation (Power Publications, Sydney, 2007).
