Ubiquitous Learning with VTC

Ubiquitous learning allows students to take multiple paths on their learning discovery because the lecture is not hindered by time, availability of an instructor or an adequate meeting place. The student can go down any rabbit hole within the area of study that intrigues them most without a timeframe to stop. I want to address ubiquitous learning in relation to informal learning. I recently stood up a course that is made up entirely of informal learning concepts since there are no tests.

I currently work in the government and in order to have an in-person class hours of driving or flying would be necessary to reach all of our counterparts. To overcome distance I used a (VTC) Video Teleconferencing during the class in order to include every student at a near real time speed.

https://www.vtc-telepresence.com/ (techopedia, 2018) Video teleconferencing is a technology that facilitates the communication and interaction of two or more users through a combination of high-quality audio and video over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. Such setups are highly useful in business and enterprise computing because they simulate real and face-to-face communication over sophisticated digital platforms and established telecommunication networks.

One of the topics included in this course is a question and answer panel with senior managers who have many years of experience and the willingness to mentor the students of the class. This panel received very high marks on the surveys and the students truly appreciated the honesty and personal stories of trial and error of the panel. This panel is critical to the student’s success because they are able to ask the tough questions and that would not be possible by just watching a streaming video or slides online. This interaction is only made possible by the availability of a VTC within our closed loop digital networks.
