Shannon Doherty Lyons received her Master’s degree in Environmental Medicine from the New York University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2005 and has been working in the Zelikoff Lab in the NYU School of Medicine’s Department of Environmental Medicine for the last 14 years. Shannon is currently a Research Scientist and a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Center Grant Community Engagement Core (CEC) Associate. As a CEC Associate, Shannon has focused on outreach and engagement regarding environmental health issues in our partner communities. Most recently, she has been working in partnership with the Bergen County community of Garfield, NJ on their Age Friendly initiative, entitled Generations for Garfield. The initiative was created in 2016, following the completion of an NYULMC IRB-approved ‘Aging in Place Community Survey’, and was awarded membership in the AARP-WHO Network of Livable Communities in 2018. Shannon has played an integral role as a community partner in the Initiative, focusing on important environmental and public health issues for older adults, such as walkability, sustainability, and prevention. Earlier this year, Shannon became a senior fellow in the New York University Aging Incubator, working in cooperation with other members of this University-wide initiative to support the development of innovative and interdisciplinary research initiatives and educational endeavors to improve the health and well-being of the oldest segment of our population.
