Presentation Types: Colloquiums

Purpose and Goals

Colloquium Sessions are organized by a group of colleagues who wish to present various dimensions of a project or perspectives on an issue. Four or five short formal presentations are followed by commentary and/or group discussion. Within the allotted time, members of the Colloquium structure their presentations in the way that suits their group presentation best.  Even if you're presenting in-person we strongly encourage you to also add your digital content.

Blended Conference Options

  1. In-Person plus Online (recommended for maximum interaction)

  2. In-Person only

  3. Online only

What does a Colloquium look like?

  • In-Person: The presenters should conceive and design the session to allow time for individual presentations (approximately 15 minutes each) and at least 15 minutes of audience discussion or question-and-answer.

  • Online: 1) a 3-5 minute “lightning talk,” supported where a colloquium chair of your choice introduces the presentation with one introductory slide the one slide per presenter; and 2) a full presentation of no more than 60 minutes, or separate presentations of no more than 15 minutes. If you choose the open access option for your written colloquium papers, your video will also be made available publicly on the web to non-attendees at the in-person or online editions of the conference.

Can I Use Visual Aids?

  • In-Person: All Colloquium Session rooms are equipped with screens and data projectors. Conference delegates are asked to bring their own laptop computers unless otherwise noted in the Session Guidelines email with the instructions for the in-person presentations. If you are a Mac user, please be sure to bring the correct adaptor. Note that overhead projectors for transparencies are not provided in session rooms. • Online:  Additional to your video presentations, please feel free to add any additional documentation to your presentation page.

Will There Be Time for Questions?

  • In-Person: It is suggested that 15-20 minutes are left at the end of the session for a question-and-answer session with the audience.

  • Online: Colloquium Sessions have dedicated online discussion areas, where comments and questions can be directed. In-person conference participants are requested to add their comments and questions during the session for the benefit of the speakers and those not attending the conference.
