Presentation Types: Workshops

Purpose and Goals

Workshop Sessions involve extensive interaction between presenters and participants around an idea or hands-on experience of a practice. These sessions may also take the form of a crafted panel, staged conversation, dialogue, or debate – all involving substantial interaction with the audience. Appropriate considerations for this Session format may include, for example: a workshop, demonstration, performance, exhibition, staged conversation, debate, or extended dialogue with the audience. This Interactive Session is a time in which skills or concepts are taught, demonstrated, or explored. These sessions are scheduled for 45 minutes and should be structured so that some explanatory or introductory information is provided, with ample time for audience interaction, participation, and involvement. Even if you're presenting in-person we strongly encourage you to also add your digital content.

Blended Conference Options

  1. In-Person plus Online (recommended for maximum interaction)

  2. In-Person only

  3. Online only

What does a Workshop Session look like?

  • In-Person: An interactive 45 minutes session which involves the audience throughout the session, and involves at least 30 minutes of audience participation.

  • Online: A recorded video workshop. If you are an in-person presenter, you will need to arrange and record this at a different time from your in-person session. If you are a remote presenter, you can pre-record your workshop. If you choose the open access option for your written colloquium papers, your video will also be made available publicly on the web to non-attendees at the in-person or online editions of the conference.

Can I Use Visual Aids?

  • In-Person: All Workshop Session rooms are equipped are equipped with screens and data projectors. Conference delegates are asked to bring their own laptop computers unless otherwise noted in the Session Guidelines email with the instructions for the in-person presentations. If you are a Mac user, please be sure to bring the correct adaptor. Note that overhead projectors for transparencies are not provided in session rooms. If you would like to provide handouts (perhaps summarizing background, methodology, or other information to supplement your presentation), 10-15 copies is a good estimate. Please note that there may not be printing or copying facilities on site, so please prepare these materials in advance of the conference

  • Online:  Additional to your video presentations, please feel free to add any additional documentation to your presentation page.

Will There Be Time for Questions?

  • In-Person: These sessions are scheduled for 45 minutes and should be structured so that some explanatory or introductory information is provided, with ample time for audience interaction, participation, and involvement.

  • Online: Workshops have dedicated online discussion areas, where comments and questions can be directed. In-person conference participants are requested to add their comments and questions during the session for the benefit of the speakers and those not attending the conference.
