Building Bridges between Science and Society : The Role of Science Museums in the Future

Abstract

The importance of science museums as educational institutions is increasingly growing. In order to face environmental challenges as the spread of infectious diseases, climate change or biodiversity loss; new frontiers and all reachable narrative means must be explored. In this paper, I analyse the educational outreach of science museums and their collections, the cornerstone to raise awareness about the climate crisis. The scope proposed is innovative, with future projection, even though this is a field widely studied. By means of the multiple and rich synergies between scientific disciplines, arts and emotions, we are focused on the use of emerging narrative resources in museology. Join me to explore these tools potential to immerse the audience into the exhibition, while promoting environmental engagement, and how they could transform the perception of the science museum as an inclusive and scientific institution. This will be shown through some examples already seen in other institutions around the world, along with some original proposals. In addition, ethical, sociological and scientific topics will be put back on the table as sustenance for thought. Everyone is welcome, museum professionals, museum visitors… but above all, museum lovers. It is time to make a change happen, and every single reachable person is needed.
