Abstract
The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) Touch Collection is an initiative to extend the contemporary art experience to audiences of all backgrounds and abilities. It comprises of adaptations of selected artworks from the National Collection created by Singapore artists addressing concepts and themes relating to the historical, cultural, and social aspects of Singapore. Portable and interactive, the SAM Touch Collection is specifically developed to travel and engage with communities such as the visually-impaired, special needs, elderly, and students. To cater to the needs of the community, these adaptations are accompanied by complementary resources and materials, such as audio guides, reproductions of finer details, and simple hands-on activities to enhance interaction and understanding. Research is conducted to measure the impact of the facilitated outreach, and hopes to generate insights on the following questions: How does the SAM Touch Collection and its facilitated outreach increase awareness of contemporary art? How can this research provide a basis for disability access in the museum? Preliminary results of survey analysis have indicated that the facilitated outreach aspects of the SAM Touch Collection has brought about an interest in contemporary art and encourage future visits to the museum.
