The Experience of People with Visual Disabilities : Accessibility and Inclusion in the Museu da Geodiversidade and Casa da Descoberta

Abstract

A large portion of the Brazilian population has some type of visual disabilities, making the word “inclusion” present in our daily lives. In view of the need to guarantee the right of all people to have access to information, knowledge, culture, and leisure, we turn our attention to museums and science centers, which are important players in the field of scientific divulgation. In this qualitative research, we study how two groups of people with visual disabilities visit two university science centers: Museu da Geodiversidade (UFRJ) and Casa da Descoberta (UFF). We use the “point of view camera” method to collect data from visits by groups of people with visual disabilities and in a second moment, depth semi-structured interviews will be conducted with each group of visitors (experiences, opinions, emotions, memories and expectations), as well as with the mediators and managers (challenges, expectations, intentions, future projects) of the two institutions visited. As a purpose, we seek to understand what are the main attitudinal, communicational and physical barriers encountered by the two groups participating in the research, if they feel included in these places and what are the main issues that permeate their visit, especially with regard to mediation, accessibility of the space and the collection and its relations with science and scientific divulgation themes. Finally, we aim to reinforce the need to implement actions that, above all, give protagonism and greater autonomy to people with visual disabilities, being built jointly with them.
