The Role of Museums in the Transfer of Cultural Heritage : Clothes and Weaving

Abstract

One of the common methods of dissemination and transfer of cultural heritage is museumization. Museumization serves as “Memory Institutions” in preserving the cultural heritage of museums. Museums are places full of cultural heritage in all aspects. Museums can be considered as one of the effective means to protect, present, and update the existence of cultural heritage. This belongs in particular to the legacy of the ancient peoples, to the legacy of the autocracy. As an institution, it contains all the components of the museum heritage. Above all, museums protect the existing and lost material and non-spiritual authoritarian elements of ethnic culture in daily life. Museums, which are one of the institutions that will best meet the needs of societies to know themselves and other societies, are also very contributing in terms of transferring the culture of clothing and weaving. Especially the museums, which were formed in order to make the importance and value of the history of clothes visible, play a vital role in the transfer of this heritage to the societies. In this study, which was prepared in order to reveal the role of museums in creating common culture for societies and in understanding people’s cultures in other civilizations, evaluations were made in terms of clothing and weaving. In this context, this study has also questioned the role of museums in the promotion and transfer of clothing and weaving culture in Turkey and some suggestions are offered on this point.
