Bringing the Museum into the ESL/ESOL Classroom: Real World Tasks in the Portfolio Based Language Assessment Framework

Abstract

The presenters will demonstrate pre and post tasks based on the CLBs (Canadian Language benchmarks) and following the PBLA framework (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) that is a requirement from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to newcomers attending language classes. In these ESL classes, instructors include everyday real fife learning along with heritage and culture and settlement issues. Instructors develop curriculum and teaching materials from real resources such as historical sites, museums, and art and culture. This technique creates interest in newcomers to learn and understand the new environment after arriving in Canada. Museums have become an essential part of their learning process. The presenters will share pre and post skill building activities to make the students visit to the museum meaningful and enjoyable while learning in depth about the heritage and culture of Canada.
