Accessibility and Patrimony : A Difficult Relationship in Museums and Historic Cities

Abstract

The current paper is part of a major project, already in practice to understand a difficult relation between accessibility and patrimony. The methodology was developed by researchers of the Pro-access Group at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The continuity of a project of an “Accessibility Guide” to places of historical interest in Brazilian touristic cities will be the product of our project. We assume that the displacement of disabled people throughout the cities helps building a society for all, since it enables the fulfillment of citizenship duties, as well as the enjoyment of civil, political, social, and cultural rights. The adoption of universality as a principle presupposes the use of all environments and products by any citizen, regardless of his/her physical, sensory or intellectual skills. The understanding of this relation between “accessibility and patrimony” is a necessary argument and useful instrument for an increasing group each day, searching for their social participation, namely: the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with limited mobility, among others. In addition, it is based on a database, of field researches. It will continue to be available through an application that will enable inclusive navigation (access requirements for blind and visually disabled people and devices for people with reduced mobility). The pilot project was already developed in Rio de Janeiro, not only due to the easy access of undergraduate students have to the surveyed areas but also because the city is the place dreamed to receive great nationals and internationals events.
