Museums Concerned with Their Landscapes as Leaders and Partners of Change

Abstract

According to Resolution One adopted by the ICOM’s General Assembly in 2016 “Museums have a particular responsibility towards the landscape that surrounds them, urban, or rural.” And thus they should “manage buildings and sites of cultural landscape as ‘extended museums’, offering enhanced protection and accessibility to such heritage in closed relationship with communities.” More and more museums feel agency regarding their neighborhoods and involve in action to safeguard, protect or change areas located next to their buildings, but already beyond their administration. Case studies encompass raising an alarm to protect post-industrial context of the museum (Muzeum Śląskie in Katowice), leading the process of transformation of a degraded railway junction into a park (Museum of Podgórze in Kraków) and revitalization of historical city square (Ethnographic Museum in Kraków), negotiating historically sensitive center of the city (Museum of the Modern Art in Warsaw), and adding prestige to civic action to protect historic townhouses that survived the WWII (POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw). Questions to address: 1) Why are museums broadening their scope and engaging in actions beyond their walls, regarding their landscape? 2) How deeply are museums ready to engage in issues outside matters directly related to their holdings and programs? 3) Where and how are they engaging? How partnerships with communities and decision makers are built? 4) Are they successful? Presented strategies may have practical implications for other museums concerned with changes taking place in their landscapes, enhancing them to give voice and take actions.
