Abstract
Strolling along the beautiful urban areas of Lisbon one might pass by the Municipal Council of Lisbon where the Pelourinho is located. This beautiful sculpted structure created by architect Eugénio dos Santos may hide a dark history in close proximity to the transatlantic slave trade. No information about auction or physical punishment of human beings is anywhere to be found. This study explores my ongoing investigation of the relationship between historical figures found in monuments in Lisbon and their role in the slave trade and other aspects of the colonial project.
