Using Online Image and Video Generators with Artificial Intelligence in Natural Science Courses: Development of Imaginative Imagination and Critical Thinking

Abstract

As educators and researchers in Natural Sciences, we have focused on the intersection of education, student visual creativity, and artificial intelligence (AI). Our work aims to make complex scientific concepts more accessible and engaging through innovative applications of AI, specifically through visual and interactive tools. We have developed a lab curriculum where students create and analyze images of cosmic phenomena by generating prompts for AI image generators such as NightCafe and Crayon. This approach encourages students to imagine freely while critically evaluating the AI-produced images. Additionally, students write prompts and create videos using platforms like InVideo and Synthesia, enabling them to visualize dynamic astronomical phenomena. Our primary interest here lies in fostering innovative and creative thinking in students through imagery. By promoting the critical and creative use of AI visual tools, we aim to prepare students for future creative challenges. Through the integration of AI to create images and videos of astronomical phenomena, students gain a deeper, more imaginative understanding of the universe. By blending traditional teaching methods with advanced visual AI technologies, we aspire to cultivate a generation of students who are not just passive consumers of AI but informed and critical users.
