Abstract
Directed by Darren Arranofsky, the 2011 film Black Swan’s plot is focused on the main character Nina’s efforts to become a lead dancer in a ballet. In this show, in addition to being the White Swan, Nina also has to be the Black Swan. The stress she endures in the process leads to psychological problems. In this study, psychological problems arising from Nina’s efforts as lead dancer in Black Swan are analysed using psychoanalytic commentary as a film analysis approach. Psychoanalytic film commentary approach allows for analysis of the film content (especially the characters) as psychoanalytic data. This study tries to explain how the film narrative was structured using Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and Lacan’s mirror stage. At the same time, visuals and cinematographic elements are discussed in the structuring of the film as a dream.
