Taking A Laughter Break for the Health of It: Harnessing the Evolutionary Power of Humor for a Successful, Healthier Life

Abstract

Laughter existed before humans had language, or a sense of humor. Yet, the primitive brain prioritized it for social bonding and cooperation. Today, many consider laughter fun, but not mandatory. In reality, it is an important component of resilience, well-being, and team success. No matter what your profession, there will always be levels of stress. Taking a Laughter Break for the Health of It helps to build resilience and enhance well-being. Learn about the history of laughter, its use for both good and evil, and why baby laughter is diabolical. Recent studies have shown that teams that laugh together succeed together – as long as they understand the ways to share laughter appropriately. Learn why teams that laugh together succeed together. For an unusual take on diversity and inclusion, attendees will experience a group exercise around their personal senses of humor and a discussion of whether or not jokes are appropriate in the workplace. Attendees will learn the concept of laughter for the health of it, without relying on jokes, with take-away exercises to share. Thanks to Norman Cousins, laughter has been a subject of research and study since the 1940s. In recent years, schools and corporations have discovered its benefits. It is time to get serious about laughter!
