Establishing a Harmonized Reproductive Health Registry to Improve Maternal and Child Health: Sharing Experience from Jordan

Abstract

Primary data on antenatal care services provided to women are scattered among hospitals and MCH centers with information flow gaps between different levels of healthcare and different health sectors in Jordan. Closing current gaps by bringing data in a consistent digital/readily accessible format, harmonized Reproductive Health Registry (hRHR) is the most appropriate intervention to improve MCH through enhancing the current health information system. We conducted a situation analysis of health information system on SRH services using mixed methods; quantitative and qualitative to inform the hRHR implementation. To ensure building on existing infrastructure and already gained experience, we involved an organization specialized in electronic health solutions in Jordan. A web application was developed to digitalize current MCH files to achieve harmonization of MCH data. There are 70 health facilities that provide SRH services at Al Mafraq Governorate. Almost 90% of those facilities provide antenatal care, postnatal care, childcare, vaccination, and family planning. More than 60% of the facilities lack on having computers, and more than 70% of SRH data collection is paper based. Hence, the unavailability of e-registry in different settings leads to limited suitable and actionable data needed for program management, policy development, and decision making. Several components regarding MCH health information system need to be addressed by decision makers including developing human resources, building their capacities, enhancing health communication, disseminating reports, enhancing infrastructure, improving network access, coordinating intersectoral endeavors, and establishing national SRH steering committee.
