Abstract
Obesity has become widespread over the past decades. This issue represents a major risk factor for some of the leading causes of death worldwide. Some authors found evidence that without intervention, children and adolescents with obesity will likely continue to be obese into adulthood. Besides, obesity in pregnancy can affect baby’s health. In this study, that included a population of more than 2000 women, we investigated the influence of maternal characteristics during pregnancy. The main goal was to characterize the relation between mothers’ pre-pregnancy body mass index and newborn weight. Health policies must deal with the obesity. We believe that preventing childhood obesity starts during pregnancy. The primary focus should be prevention, but we must also treat those already experiencing obesity.
