School Agility Index: A New Concept of Integrating School Wellness and Infrastructure Towards Sustainable Health

Abstract

The unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic has forced many schools to shut down. Previous research found compelling evidence where school closures successfully reduced the virus transmission. It resulted in the sudden change of pedagogy in education due to online learning. Furthermore, the administration recognizes the challenges faced by students in historically underserved communities. Those students are less likely to have access to the prerequisites of learning and parents or guardians with unperceived job flexibility have to aid their child with remote learning. Nevertheless, based on data, 68% respondents of school stakeholders still choose online learning due to the inadequate school health and safety assurance. Simultaneously, as 78% respondents commended in-class learning more than remote learning, School Agility Index (SAI) is introduced to enhance school wellness, student-teacher-staff safety, health and improvement of educational activities as win-win solutions. Through analytical studies, the SAI model evaluates all wellness aspects of a school by a “systems engineering” approach. The model measures ten variables from every school stakeholder and integrate it with school infrastructures readiness. The SAI algorithm is developed based on a risk management concept that links to the decision of health and wellness status to commences transparency between stakeholders and benefiting the school communities. Students and parents can see how the school practices its hygiene, safety, nourishment, and building management to meet health and safety assurance. In the long term, concurrently with Society 5.0, the practice of digitalization has complemented SAI as a one-stop solution to achieve wellness in schools.
