Abstract
This research explores the impact sexual violence has on the sexual selfhood of women. Through narratives provided by female research participants, the effects of sexual violence on sexual selfhood is examined in justifications and excuses, sexual orientation, sexual trauma, exploitation, communication issues, labeling of victims/survivors, stigmatization and shame, and sexual aspirations. The stories imparted by participants in the study reveal a complex webbing of physical and emotional reactions to sexual trauma that hinders sexual development or sets a negative trajectory in the process of sexual selfhood. Who these motivated storytellers are sexually, who they become sexually, and the meanings they actively assign to their sexuality serves to uncover the processual dynamic of their sexual selfhood with the variable of sexual violence as an ongoing factor.
