Growing a Victory Garden: Get Help Right Now

Abstract

The idea of growing your own food at home to avoid hunger caused by food shortages during the COVID 19 Pandemic seems enticing. During both WWI and WWII Victory Gardens were heavily promoted as a means to boost the health, nutrition needs, and the morale of the families on the Homefront. While this seems the right thing to do in this time of need, effects of “generational distancing” in current family structures make sustainable gardening more difficult today than the typical family 100 years ago. Converting lawns and flower beds into productive food plots takes knowledge, careful planning, hard work, and plenty of time. In the event of the “Second Wave,” NOW is the time for planning, preparing, and planting a Victory Garden! Based on a lifetime of personal application, this discussion will address the following critical issues: 1. Assessing options. Space needs/limitations. Light. Access. Security. 2. Planning a menu from what will your garden grow vs. what your family will eat? 3. Getting Help. How to recruit a labor force necessary to cultivate your Victory Garden. Form or join a Victory Garden Club. 4. Cultivating the heart and the mind. Looking beyond the science of gardening into the art of connecting to the earth.
