Empowerment of Health Education in Schools: Opportunities to Improve the Health Objectives of Albania

Abstract

The education and health system during three decades has undergone significant changes oriented to different models. Currently there is a lack of education and health promotion curricula, low level of teachers professional competences in the field of health education and promotion, low interaction with specialized public health institutions and few qualifications in this field. The rapid development of Albanian society requires that education and health system enable opportunities for students to develop the level of knowledge and health education, thus influencing the creation of a generation with the skills necessary to cope with the challenges of our society and to achieve the health objectives of the population. This is descriptive and analytic study uses quantitative and qualitative methods. This study is based on analysis of 500 teachers of Physical and Health Education in Albania. Albanian curricula of health education was analysed and compared with European models. Results In Albanian education system is a new approach of health education. Since 2014 teachers of Physical Education, Sports and Health learn to the pupils health education and promotion. There is no text books for pupils. Levels of professional competencies of teachers are low. There is immediate need to qualify teachers of Physical and Health Education. Also needed is to develop health education curricula. Health system should interact with education system to enhance collaboration for a annual action plan to be implemented in partnership with public health services and schools in Albania.
