Perceived Interparental Marital Conflict Leading towards Marital Relationship and Marital Commitments in Young Adults

Abstract

This research investigated the relationship of Perceived Interparental Marital Conflicts with Marital Commitment and Marital Satisfaction in the marital relationships of young adults from conflicting and non-conflicting families. The following hypotheses were formulated after a review of literature: 1) marital satisfaction and marital commitment would be lower in adults who belong to conflicted families than those who belong to non-conflicted families; 2) there is a negative relationship in level of Perceived Interparental Marital Conflict and Marital Commitment in young adults; and 3) perceived Interparental Marital Conflicts have a negative relationship with the level of Marital Satisfaction in young adults. This study comprised one hundred married couples with less than five years of marriage and with an age range of twenty to twenty-five. Minimum education level was fourteen years, and the socioeconomic status was middle and upper class. The Children’s Perceptions of Interparental Conflict Scale (CPIC; Grych, Seid and Fincham, 2013), Stanley’s Commitment Inventory (SCI; Stanley and Markman, 1992), and the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS; Hendrick, 1988) were used to study the variables. Pearson product moment correlation and T-Test using Statistical Package analyzed the data. The results suggested that perceived interparental marital conflicts had a strong negative correlation with marital commitment (r = -.821, p <.01) and marital satisfaction (r = -.873, p <.01). It is concluded that interparental conflicts have a relationship with their children’s martial relationship.
