Abstract
Today’s children and adolescents are more isolated and marginalized than ever before, even though they may seem “connected” via the internet and social media. Why is it that today’s youth experience such high rates of depression and anxiety? How can we raise children to be positive in a world that is filtered by negativity and cynicism “online,” or in the media? Can we “code” our children to be more resilient and happier adults? How will their mindset impact A/I and online reality interface in the future? This study reviews research on the impact of social media, excessive gaming, and internet use on child development. How are online activities influencing cognitive development? What can we do to help a generation of youth that does not know the nature of relationships before the internet? Evidence-based strategies from the disciplines of Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are reviewed for educators and helping professionals that are aimed at fostering a positive growth mindset, promoting resiliency, understanding the mindset-destiny relationship, and practical cognitive strategies for choosing happiness.
