Curbing Malnutrition in a Tribal Population in India: Assessing the Impact of Poshan Abhiyaan

Abstract

Launched in March 2018, the Poshan Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) is India’s flagship program to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and adolescent girls. The program falls under the Women and Child Development Ministry. The Poshan Abhiyan aims at reaching every household with the message of nutrition with the tag line “har ghar Poshan tyohar.” Being the most vulnerable section of the society, the impact of susceptibility increases manifold in the case of tribals, as they belong to the marginalized segment of the society. In this paper, using a mixed-method approach, the author highlights the reach of the intervention in a tribal population in a district and discusses the challenges that decrease the success of the program. Overall, the author examines the reach and effectiveness of behavior change communication efforts and challenges faced by the frontline workers while working with tribal populations.
