New Tax Policies to Promote Public Health and Well-Being

Abstract

This paper: (1) summarizes existing public-health anti-obesity tax rules in the United States, including various taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages and junk-food taxes imposed by the Navajo Nation; (2) explores the normative rationales for existing anti-obesity tax rules and new proposed tax rules that would promote public health and well-being; and (3) specifies design features of the new proposed public health tax rules.
