A Spatial Study of Oral Cancer Mortality and Incidence in the USA : Cancer Clusters in the USA

Abstract

An epidemiological disease surveillance methodology is used to study cancer mortality for oral cancer and to identify significant clusters with the disease surveillance software SaTScan. Several covariates or risk factors are studied to identify the most significant risk factors and to show spatially where in the USA some risk factors are most prevalent. Cluster maps are created with the GIS software ArcGIS. Such results are useful to health agencies to study in more depth the possible causes of oral cancer clusters.
