Smart Cities Health Care Integration: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

Cities are an important fabric of human existence. Smart cities are leveraging Information Communication Technology (ICT) to understand and address challenges faced by municipalities. The purpose of this paper is to identify the opportunities and challenges presented when health care data is integrated in a smart city information hub. This paper, which utilizes reviews of relevant literature, identifies some of the reasons that smart city healthcare integration has not seen as much adoption as other areas of smart city project portfolios. A key reason for this lack of traction is that due to privacy concerns, healthcare data has always been siloed within a singular organization or a defined network of healthcare stakeholders. This, in turn, has led to a major challenge worldwide: how to share medical data with stakeholders for various purposes without sacrificing data security and privacy?
