Equity Through Empowerment: The Art of Creating Safe Spaces

Abstract

Equity can best be accomplished when all members of society feel free and safe to share their voice and gifts. Empowerment Self-Defense Workshop addresses this need by providing skills and tools for attendees to define and create what they need to feel safe in today’s ever-changing landscape. This workshop teaches how to set boundaries both subtly and boldly, to match body and verbal language to relay messages and how to anticipate and de-escalate situations. Additionally, the workshop provides attendees with skills to manage situations where their boundaries are in jeopardy or have been crossed. Our studies have shown that those who do not know how to defend their boundaries are far less likely to create them and often times feel fearful or violated. With these skills expanded attendees feel empowered to share their voice with confidence. We are a better society when people feel welcome and safe to share their voices.
