The Impact of Travel Experiences for Seniors : Opportunities and Benefits for Active and Healthy Ageing

Abstract

The world’s population is ageing with virtually every country in the world experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older people in the population. The United Nations (2015) has recognised the fact that the numbers of the older population are growing rapidly across the world. The number of over 60s has risen by a third over the last decade, making this the fastest growing consumer segment (Euromonitor, 2017). Active ageing is viewed as the process of optimising opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age (World Health Organisation, 2002). This study through literature review and the insights of senior travelers to gain a more rounded understanding explores what role tourism plays in active and healthy ageing.
