The Quality of Life of Hospitalized Children

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the quality of life of children hospitalized in the hospital environment. This study deals with quantitative research carried out in a pediatric and public hospital in the Itajaí Valley region, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The collection instrument was the Quality of Life Assessment Scale (AUQEI) which is a questionnaire composed of twenty-six questions with scores ranging from 0 to 3, corresponding, respectively, to very unhappy, unhappy, happy, and very happy, distributed in four domains that explore family, social relationships, activities, health, functions, body, and separation. Data collection began only after termination of the Research Ethics Committee under opinion No. 1.499.851. 103 children participated, 55.3% male and 44.7% female, and aged between four and twelve years. The overall score obtained was 54.66, in general terms, as happy. Only twelve children indicated a negative quality of life. The results indicate that children feel very happy about leisure, and are happy in the family, functions, and autonomy dimensions, being a family dimension in the highest average. No statistically significant differences were observed between the QoL indices presented by female and male children, as well as the children’s age functions, and the medical or surgical clinic. The results indicated good quality of life results, and were not considered significant the statistics between the sex and age of users, as well as the clinic functions, the indicators, as well as the quality of life of individuals, which are good variables used.
