An Examination of Latinx Immigrant Psychological Well-Being in the U.S. Justice System

Abstract

This study examined fifty-two immigrants from Mexico, and Central America who have been charged with various crimes in the United States. A comparison group of thirty-seven American-born inmates were also surveyed. The Beck Depression Inventory as well as other psychological and legal assessments were used. Results showed that immigrant defendants were significantly more depressed compared with the control group. In addition, immigrant participants showed significantly different scores on measures of experienced prejudice, and views of the legal system. Limitations and future directions are discussed.
