Shaping Place in Informal Settlements

Abstract

This paper explores the shaping of places in informal settlements, addressing a significant gap in understanding the dynamics of place in the context of global South cities. The study examines spatial structures and incremental adaptations in various informal settlements. Using direct observation, extensive urban photography, and field notes, the research presents critical case studies that have undergone a mix of informal and formal transformations. The spatial structures and incremental changes are analysed to elaborate on the dynamics of places that are in the process of becoming. The study offers a nuanced understanding of how places are being shaped in informal settlements.
