Abstract
In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, the majority of people’s daily activity areas were within their own homes and neighborhood environments. Facing this unprecedented challenge, the neighborhood built environment needed to be quickly adjusted, and property management service providers and social workers took the leading role in managing these adjustments in China. Based on the results of field study and interviews with stakeholders, the adjustments mainly included 1) enhanced entry and exit registration control, 2) cleaning and disinfection, 3) delivery of food and other essential supplies, 4) monitoring the physical and mental health status of residents, 5) updating the latest development of the pandemic to residents. During the lock-downs, many neighbourhood responded effectively. However, some neighborhoods had difficulty accommodating the abovementioned adjustments and became vulnerable, mainly in aged neighborhoods and neighborhoods without sufficient resources. Hoping to support property managers and social workers to perform these adjustments, an adaptive container design has been proposed. Various functional modules to be installed within containers were designed, including 1) automated disinfection, 2) automatic body temperature measurement, 3) system for supply storage and robotic delivery, 4) staff room. Containers with different combinations of functional modules are expected to be placed at different locations when needed. An integrated management system is also proposed to connect property management staff and social workers, residents, and each container and its robotic delivery and robotic disinfection functions. This system can also be included in the local smart city framework that enables better management of guarded residential neighborhoods.
