Abstract
The notion of multidimensional human habitat understood as a complex system analogous to the constructed environment expands the ways for modifying the existing urban design and changing the determinants from which public space is conceived. In addition, it enables the intervention of spaces for the purpose of design factors’ improvement or correction in which mistakes are manifested in the phase of use and occupation. To illustrate the application of this notion, this research presents a study case situated in the city of Cali during the Colombian National Strike of 2021 and the COVID-19 pandemic. In the dynamics caused by this social conflict, two spaces emerged known as ‘Paso del Aguante’ and ‘Puerto Resistencia’ were the result of the appropriation and use of public spaces that were intervened by the community present in demonstrations; these interventions showed drastic transformations to the existing public space as a product of socio-cultural dynamics of the inhabitants. In this sense, based on the multidimensional model of the habitat, the mistakes of the existing design are identified through the analysis of the socio-cultural interventions carried out by the protesters through photographic and planimetric archives. Then, the use of qualitative techniques such as interviews aimed at social leaders of the protest allows us to understand the functioning of the environment that was built by this community without previous planning. Ultimately, the information obtained is integrated to formulate recommendations at the scale of the human habitat that could influence future determinants of the design of urban public space.
