Abstract
Disasters caused by socio-natural hazards in Chile have become increasingly frequent, putting pressure on communities to be prepared. Based on evidence that play has positive implications for psychological and physical development, we use play to foster resilience in a community. Our objective was to understand the community learning experience in the face of socio-natural disasters through the Costa Resiliente Serious Game (CR). CR is a serious collaborative role-playing game where different resources are arranged on a board representing the Chilean coast, to generate resilient strategies in the face of socio-natural threats; it has a board version (JM) and a video game version (VJ). We conducted an ethnographically oriented qualitative approach in a case study (Corral, Chile), the fieldwork involved observation, interviews and group conversations with players (JM and VJ). The results systematize the experience of the participants in five themes: game experience, game time, learning attributed to the game, difficulties and perceived usefulness. A positive evaluation of CR as a learning tool stands out, and on the other hand, the difficulty of participation and commitment of adult players. We conclude that the RC gaming experience can facilitate community learning about disasters caused by socio-natural hazards in people committed to their community. However, consideration should be given to the possibilities and restrictions that community members have to engage in environmental education, difficulties that can be addressed with game-based strategies.
