Learning from the Whole Team in Design and Construction Delivery : Including Craftspersons as Co-Creatives, Co-Authors, and Stakeholders

Abstract

In the research and practice realms of the construction industry, including architecture, landscape architecture, and engineering stakeholders and inclusive design is taken to mean the authentic collaboration with user groups, owners, and others external to the design work flows. This study considers how very few design practitioners and apparently even fewer researchers show interest in for scholarly enquiry or improving practice through the inclusion of the participation and agency of the craftspersons in design and construction delivery practices, learning, and work flows. Despite some few papers published over the last 50 years accounting for the co-authorship of craftspeople in the building arts, there is still a dearth of research on the subject and even a rejection of craftspersons present/future significance since many designers, or Patrick Schumacher’s new “parametrician” designers, believe in the efficacy and enhanced level of quality achieved through workflow based on moving directly from BIM based computer modelled online object designs to fabrication and installation on site, ideally by robotic agents.
