Abstract
In the modern age of excess waste, energy-from-waste (EfW) facilities seek to lower the amount of waste being sent to landfills while also providing a new source of energy. Marion County’s energy-from-waste facility, Covanta Marion, has been hotly debated within the local community as to whether or not the facility does more harm than good. This case study of Covanta Marion examines the potential relationships and correlations between public opinion, current facility statistics, and public health risks. Public opinion trends within Marion Country pertaining to the facility are explored, and whether these trends are influenced by modern data available about Covanta’s operations and impacts is considered. Both the statistics and public opinion trends are utilized in addition to known public health risks in the Marion County area to consider the influence of and information behind current public critiques of Covanta Marion, and consider the ways in which Covanta Marion could improve its operations.
