Environmental Management of Buddhist Temple in Northeastern Thailand

Abstract

This paper considers the environmental management of Buddhist Temple in northeastern Thailand. The data were collected by in-depth interview of 20 purposive key informants from the community leaders, and non-participating observation of environment management activities. The study employs a content analysis with the assistance of ATLAS.ti software. The research found that there are five major features of environmental management in Buddhist Temple in northeastern Thailand. Cleanliness and orderliness management, temple green space, waste management, health and environmental knowledge promotion and campaign and the participation from all related sectors. Three of features, cleanliness and orderliness management, temple green space, waste management, are proceed efficiently. However, Health and environmental knowledge promotion and campaign and the participation from all related sectors still cannot proceed with concrete and efficiency. Moreover, sustainability in environmental management of temple is one of the important problem, because most of environment management campaigns ideas and supports are still from government and communities, but not from the temple itself.
