Waste Merit : Application of Buddhist Dharma to Waste Management in Thailand

Abstract

This paper considers the practical application of Buddhist Dharma to the waste management in Khon Kaen city areas. The data were collected by in-depth interviewed 24 community leaders in Khon Kaen city which specific selected from the city center community, suburban community and nearby areas together with the non-cooperative observation. The qualitative data were analyzed through ATLAS program. The research found that there are two major campaigns in practical application of Buddhist Dharma in the waste management; first, waste merit campaign, by encourage community members to sorting household garbage and dedicate it to temple in Buddhist holy day or religious ceremony day, temple was provide the place to sorting different types of garbage and exchange the garbage to be money for temple public utility’s expense; second, waste-free funeral campaign, by encourage community members using do not cause garbage item to decorate coffin and crematorium such as tree and homegrown vegetable, which can continue plant to increase the temple’s green space after funeral. Otherwise, encourage them to not create garbage using foam and plastic containers in others religious ceremony.
