Sustainable Urban and Regional Planning in Nigeria: Contemporary Issues and Challenges

Abstract

Urban and regional planning had been a physical development oriented activity right from the early periods of human settlements. It was only within the later part of the twentieth century, that the practice of urban and planning in developed parts of the world has been immensely expanded and modernized to incorporate socio-economic issues. This study examined the issues and challenges in urban and regional planning in Nigeria. A content analysis studies to examine previous research was employed, using deductive approach and relevant documents on urban and regional planning. In addition, observations in the course of practice of urban and regional planning as planners and lecturer-student interactions have been used by the authors. The major challenges confronting urban and planning in Nigeria include the following: gaps in communication, lack of integrating goals of socio-economy with objectives of physical planning, among others. It is therefore concluded that there is need for adequate public participation which requires a holistic approach by integrating physical/environmental, cultural/sociological and economic/managerial goals.
