The Perception of Carbon Emission Reduction of Isan Urban People in Khon Kaen, Thailand

Abstract

At the present time, various nations give precedence to solve the climate change problem which as a result of global warming. The literature shows that people living in urban areas are responsible for three quarters of the global carbon emissions. Developing low carbon cities is crucial to mitigate these emissions. The focus of this study is on efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the urban region of Khon Kaen, located in Northeast Thailand. The objectives of this research were to study the perception level and to investigate the influence factors for perception level of carbon emission reduction of Isan urban people in Khon Kaen. This study used exploratory mixed methods. We start with qualitative method by in-depth interviews as well as by participatory and non-participatory observations with 24 key informants who were the community heads and members from four communities in Khon Kaen. After we added the new variables from the qualitative results, the survey research was follow by questionnaire. The samples were 400 urban people from four communities same qualitative phase. Systematic sampling was use to selected the sample of this survey. Statistical data method uses for data analysis were descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. Data analyze by the computer software. The results indicated that the perception level of carbon emission reduction of the Isan urban people was medium and the influenced factors for perception level were environmental attitude, social support, and role models.
