Rethinking Households Sanitation Threat in Lagos Megacity: A Study of Kosofe Metropolis

Abstract

This study considers the threat of sanitation practices on households in Lagos megacity. A case study research design was adopted. It was done in the Kosofe Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos. The population for the study was 539 households in the three Local Council Development Area (LCDA). Non-stratified random sampling technique was used to select 100 households each from the three LCDA in the LGAs. A questionnaire consisting of 30 items was used to elicit information from the respondents. The study identified various causes of poor sanitation, the effects of sanitation on household health, the ways in which the households provided equipment/facilities to enhance sanitation as well as the strategies for improving households’ sanitation so as to reduce the negative effects of poor sanitation on households’ health. The study recommends the following; the households have to ensure that the various ways of improving sanitation within the households are used in synergy, the households have to ensure that those in charge of collecting waste are adequately monitored as well as adequately funded by the Government for the procurement of facilities that will enhance proper household sanitation.
