Rediscovering a Territory through Built Heritage

Abstract

Historical findings are spread through the Italian territory as cultural heritage testimony of populations that lived here since ancient times. Historical findings are often set in the rural area, outside the contemporary urban fabric, where the risk is greater to forget and lose track of them. The need to preserve them, and to enhance and reconstitute a territorial system capable to respect local resources, render these emergencies the occasion for a project and a new development perspective. The Orsini Park, along the ridge of the hill Strozzoni, adjacent to Pitigliano, is one example of the sixteenth-century park, of which today remain some seats, carved on the outcrops of tufa. At the edge of the Park, there is a ruin, part of the Convent of San Francesco, which structure was designed by Antonio da San Gallo il Giovane at the beginning of 1500. The present poster addresses the different phases of investigation: from research to the project. First, the ancient settlement typology is investigated: it exploits the characteristics of the place that is fundamental part of it. Therefore, the architectural analysis: studying the generating matrices, the project stems from the geometry of the original project and reinterprets it to favor contemporary needs. Acting on the territory means to operate in a complex system, by intersection and co-operation of different systems (i.e.cultural, environmental, etc.), where cultural built heritage is enhanced to promote a greater cohesion with contemporary settlements.
