Forcing Urbanization of Indian Himalayan Tribes: Government Clean Energy Policies as Drivers of Unintended and Unplanned Urbanization

Abstract

This paper uses primary data collected between 2016-18 from the site of six large hydro projects under construction in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and GIS data on Urban Growth in the same region to analyse the emerging nature of a forced spatial shift from rural to urban growth that is shrouded in geopolitical tensions. Using questionnaire and survey data from Social Impact Assessments used during the Environmental Impact Clearance process, the research examines the changing nature of development impacts on protected ecologies like the Himalayas and its occupant tribes.
