Abstract

This study explores the volume of water consumed by urban households for various purposes in Osogbo. The objectives of this study were to examine the socio-economic characteristics of the households, sources of water supply, and volume of water consumption by households in the study area. For data collection, three residential areas were purposively selected, each from low, medium, and high density areas. Primary data were obtained using Random Systematic Sampling Techniques to administer a total of 263 structured questionnaires for the households. The study employed descriptive analysis such as means and percentages to achieve the objectives of the inquiry. Findings reveal that the volume of water consumption was very high in the low density area of the city with 60.3% of the households consuming about 1250 liters of water per week, 42% and 35% of the respondents consume same in the medium and high density areas respectively. The dominant source of water across the three residential areas in the study area was hand dug well (46%) followed by tap (22.4%) and borehole (15.7%). The study concluded that the government, community, non governmental organization, and individuals all have quintessential roles to play in the provision of water in the study area.
